Synopsis: What on eARTh are we doing with this old globe?
What in the world are we doing? |
Cleaning out my parents house a few years ago we found this old globe I had in my room as a kid. There was truly nothing special about it, but the sentimental (hoarder) part of me decided to hold on to it. One day I'll do something with this...
Well, it has been collecting dust for years; and upon revisiting it and once again debating toss or treasure... I came up with this fun upcycle project! What do you think? Is this something you'd attempt, or would you simply let the globe go?
Now, had I the foresight to think I would put it up on that shelf in my travel themed guest room... I would have perhaps angled the words more on the bottom of the globe than the top, but no matter. Check out how I did it below.
Step 1: Gather Materials & Apply Decals
I had a globe (with topography, but that truly doesn't matter for this project), Annie Sloan's chalk paint (any paint will do I think, but this is what I had on hand) and the a travel decal from trading phrases which you can find here.
Applying the decals was easy, but cut apart the words so you can get the perfect spacing. Don't do like I did and put them all at the top if the globe will be up high. I tried to pick an area that had a lot of color when I applied them- I still stand by that one.
Step 2: Paint and Remove Decals
Apply your paint evenly around the globe. Since mine had texture I had to press paint into the grooves of the mountains and such, and due to this I had to do two coats. You may or may not have the same problem.
When the paint is fully dry (overnight) go back and remove your decals. Go slow, if your globe has a paper map on it they may want to bring the paper with them- do not let this happen! They are not meant to be together.
Step 3: Placement
You are done! Admire your handiwork and put the globe somewhere to be admired. Optionally you can apply a decal to the other side on top of the globe- I chose this one, in case you ever get bored. |
