Expert advice on installing wall decals on freshly painted walls. Relax, we encourage you to procrastinate!
Paint Makes a DifferenceWe’ve all been there, you just peeled the last of the masking tape off of the trim and stand back admiring the paint job that took your room from blah to amazing. Now you can’t wait to decorate that room and have already ordered the perfect decal to add the final touch to your handiwork. We encourage you to hold off on that for a little bit, and we’ll explain why. Paint comes in many forms. From the ubiquitous latex paint at any home improvement store to specialty paints that add amazing finish details such as texture or metallic finishes. Paint continues to get more sophisticated, and the additives that are used are nothing short of a chemically based mix of awesomeness, but those paints need time to cure before your decal is a perfect match. The industry term of letting the paint breathe is called ‘gassing out’ where the chemicals stabilize, the smell dissipates, and you get settled in with your new color. This process can take up to 3 weeks. Our vinyl decals are made with an indoor rated adhesive that is considered ‘low tack’ in the sign industry. This makes them removable, but also makes them want to stick to nicely cured painted surfaces. Applying a decal too soon will result in a decal that doesn’t want to stick. Save yourself the headache and wait at least 3 weeks before applying the decal to a wall. You’ll be glad you did. For those specialty paints, such as anti-graffiti, high gloss, and other paints that naturally fight stains and marks, you’re going to need some elbow grease to get those decals to stick to a surface that is designed to repel them.
