Synopsis:

Boxes are a part of our lives, from everyday sorting and containing (recycling, donations, etc.) to longer term storage; we've got ideas to cleverly conceal that hum drum box as a personal work of art!

The holidays are here and that means one thing… you have an abundance of boxes! Okay, so it actually means more than that, but if you do have some boxes laying around and would like to put them to good use I have a fun and easy project for you that even the kids can get into.

You Will Need:

  • Cardboard box
  • Paint (I used acrylic)
  • Paintbrush (standard variety)
  • Knife
  • Decal of your choosing

Here is how it works:
1. Take your box and carefully cut the flaps off of the top. I noticed that I did a better job my second time around when I held them straight out instead of bending them down while I cut- maybe use a practice box to get your technique down.

2. Paint the box the color of your choosing. For my daughters playroom I used purple, for my recycling box I used bright blue. I did two coats of paint, allowing the first to dry completely before applying my second coat. I also painted the inside of the box- but that is personal preference.

3. Wait. If you are anything like me you will be admiring your handiwork and chomping at the bit to finish your project. Don’t, leave it alone for at least an hour! The paint needs to set before you apply your decal or it won’t adhere right and you’ll mess up your fabulous paint job.

4. Apply your decal as per the instructions that come with it. Super easy- stick, rub, and remove paper…. Voila!

Look at you, you craft genius you! Imagine the possibilities- sure, this won’t be featured in Martha Stewart but it was close to free, you won’t mind if it gets smashed by a rambunctious toddler, and it adds some instant splendor to the room. My daughter LOVES hers- and is now much better about putting her blocks away.

*Ideas: recycling box, toy box with Child’s name, newspaper/magazine box, small holiday box for trinkets, linens box, items to donate box, husband’s junk laying around the house… box.

Do you have any great ideas for this? Please leave a comment!
