Designate your place at the table with these easy-as-can-be adorable placemats! Everyone can help make their own... and clean them too, save your table!

I have never really understood placemats- why would you put something on your table that you have to wipe off instead of just wiping off the table? I have now come to see the error of my ways! I now have a toddler shoving oatmeal into the cracks of my table, and wanted something I can throw in the sink and rinse off… a placemat! I began my search and didn’t find anything that I really liked- they were either too “kiddy,” boring, or expensive… I really wanted to make my own, and had the perfect idea for it… which I’m going to share with you right now! I am in LOVE with this adorable new mat, and my daughter loves it too and even more so that she helped “make” it.

This project is literally so easy a monkey could do it- the hardest part is cutting the mat straight.

You Will Need:

• Roll of vinyl at desired thickness, I found mine at JoAnne’s and chose a thickness of 12 gauge for 4.99/yd. (I had to ask an associate where to find it, in my store it was against the wall by the incredibly large fancy fabric on rolls) I found a 50% off coupon online and paid $2.50 for a yard of it… which would likely make about 8 generous sized placemats.

• Scissors

• Decal of choice from Trading Phrases I chose this one LINK, which was fun because I got to use the square with her initial and am going to use her name somewhere else! I chose a color I knew she’d like.

1. Cut your vinyl to the desired size (I eyeballed the space I wanted to fill). I found that this was the most difficult part- cutting the design straight. What I did that made it easier was putting it on the edge of the table and using the lip of the table as my straight edge. I’m guessing a ruler and razorblade would work well, too.

2. Apply decal of choice. I chose a monogram so that we could designate that it was my daughters- but I can envision MANY adorable designs such as- flying birds, butterflies, the curly branch and birds, gears, trucks, etc. You can really make this match any personality type or décor! We have an adorable chevron pattern that I might try next, too.

This is really so cute and versatile! Trading Phrases offers almost 70 colors and thousands of designs (and will work with you if you want something custom made for free)… so the possibilities are truly endless. The decals have been run through the dishwasher so I know they will hold up to many scrubbings- though, I am not sure I would run the vinyl mat through the dishwasher as I don’t know how it would hold up (let me know if you try it). I love this easy project, and it saved my table!

What do you think?
